A simplistic yet stellar hostel centered in the heart of Bangkok’s China town enables tourists and backpackers to experience local culture in Sampeng. Striving to share local culture with visitors, Pattakorn Thanasarnaksorn and Sanon Wangsangboon opened LUK Hostel, providing the experience of traversing through Thailand’s’ fascinating Chinatown.
Location Overview / How far from Central Bangkok or major City:
A mere three kilometers from the center of Bangkok, Sampeng is the home to Thailand’s renown China Town and Sampeng Market. The area consists of numerous local shops selling cheap fashion clothing and accessories, fabrics, food where tourists can shop away at wholesale prices. Not many hostels around provide accommodations and experiences quite like LUK Hostel. With a total area of over 1,020 square meters, it boasts up to 84 beds in a dorm room and 6 private rooms. More, LUK Hostel was designed by a team of architects from TIDTANG STUDIO who aimed to incorporate the area’s influences into the design and theme of the hostel itself to provide for the best experience for tourists.
Entering the reception area, customers are introduced to an atmosphere similar to that of Chinatown. The presence of skylights in the hollow column which runs through the center of the building provides natural lighting and creates interchangeable views between the upper deck and corridor area on each floor. The hostel opens as a cafe during the day, acts as a contemporary rooftop bar with a Chinatown vibe at night.

Contributions of the tourist activities on the community or environment
I would like to introduce you to why we chose this location. We tried to find a location with a unique experience not only in the place itself, but also the area. Chinatown used to be the area of chance and hope for Chinese migrants. It was the origin of where Chinese culture was forged. It has been the most prominent trading area in Bangkok, which allowed for the development of entrepreneur like ideas. This is an area for the cultivating of communities who seek new futures, and is a place for experimenting with businesses, etc. Therefore, the hostel was developed on the basis of representing that culture, and to preserve the traditional culture of the Chinese people in Bangkok. ”
Our business is an inclusive business, which aims to include the community around in the success and the development of the hostel, which is a modern and sustainable business model, and one that is effective in helping preserving local culture. An example of this is the empowerment of local stores, shops, restaurants, cafes to the customers, to promote more unique ways of traversing and exploring the city and the area and provide exposure for the local businesses.
